Everything you need to know about how Dollars & Sense works, how your data is handled, and what you're getting.

Getting Started
It's a browser-based budgeting tool that helps you track your income, expenses, savings, and debt — all in one place. You enter your numbers, and the tool does the math, shows you where you stand, and helps you make a plan. It works whether you use a bank account, cash, payment apps, or a combination of all of them.
It works in any browser on any device — phone, tablet, or computer. You can also add it to your home screen and it opens like an app. No app store download required. Most of our users open it on their phone at night when they're ready to sit with their numbers.
No. There's no account, no login, no password to remember. You open the tool and start using it. Your data stays in your browser — we never see it and we never store it.
Free gives you one month of budgeting — income, expenses, savings, and a snapshot of where you stand. It's a great way to see if the approach works for you. Starter gives you 12 months of tracking with planned vs. actual spending, multiple savings and debt goals, a visual dashboard, and a bill calendar. Premium gives you 36 months of tracking plus a debt payoff planner, net worth tracker, retirement explorer, and daily spending log. Both Starter and Premium are one-time purchases — no subscriptions, no recurring fees.
Yes. And you can take your data with you. The Free version includes a JSON download option. When you're ready to upgrade, download your Free data, purchase Starter or Premium, and import your file into the new tool. Your numbers carry over so you don't have to start from scratch.
Privacy & Your Data
Because your financial data is yours. Not ours, not a third party's, not a data broker's. Your budget lives in your browser's local storage. We never see it. A couple of clicks to enter your numbers is worth your privacy.
In your browser, on your device. That's it. There's no server, no database, no cloud. When you close the tool, your data stays right where it is — in your browser's local storage. We never see it, we never touch it, and we have no way to access it.
All three versions — Free, Starter, and Premium — include a JSON download feature. Save your backup file, and you can restore your full budget anytime on any device. If you upgrade from Free to Starter or Premium, you can bring your data with you. We recommend downloading a backup after each session.
Because automatic sync requires a server, and a server means your financial data lives somewhere other than your device. That's a line we chose not to cross. Instead, you download your JSON backup file, share it with your partner however you'd like — text, email, AirDrop, a shared folder — and they import it into their tool. Then they do the same back to you. It's a few extra steps, and we know that. But those steps are the price of keeping your data completely private. No account. No cloud. No one in the middle. We think that tradeoff is worth it.
Yes. Since your data lives in your browser, each device has its own copy. To keep them in sync, download your JSON backup from one device and import it on the other. It takes about 30 seconds. The same file works on your phone, tablet, or computer.
Using the Tool
The Excel download gives you a clean, formatted snapshot of your budget data — your income, expenses, savings, and totals — exactly as you entered them in the tool. It's designed to be a record you can save, print, or share. It's not a working spreadsheet with formulas. It doesn't replace the tool — it captures what the tool calculated so you have a copy outside your browser.
Yes. On Starter and Premium, you can navigate to any month you've used and update your numbers. Your dashboard and insights update automatically based on whatever data is there. If you're on Free, you have one month at a time.
Starter and Premium let you choose your pay frequency — weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly — and the tool adjusts your monthly income calculation accordingly. If your income varies, you can update it each month to reflect what you actually brought in.
The Daily Log is available on Starter and Premium. It lets you record individual purchases as they happen — what you spent, what category it falls under, and the date. Those entries roll up into your actual spending totals automatically, so you can see how your real spending compares to what you planned.
Planned is what you expect to spend. Actual is what you really spent. You can fill in the actual amount directly in the expense editor, or let the Daily Log calculate it for you based on your logged purchases. The dashboard shows you the gap between the two so you can see where you're on track and where you're not.
The bill calendar shows all your bills for the month with their due dates, amounts, and whether you've marked them as paid. The cash flow view breaks your month into pay periods so you can see exactly what's due before each paycheck lands and how much you'll have left over. Together, they give you a clear picture of when money is coming in and when it's going out. Available on Starter and Premium.
No. This is a tool to help you see your own numbers clearly. What you do with that clarity is up to you. We just make the seeing part easier.
Payments & Access
It means exactly that. You pay once. You keep the tool. No subscriptions. No surprise charges. The version you purchased is yours for as long as you want to use it.
Because this is a digital product with instant access, all sales are final. That's why the Free version exists — so you can try the approach before you buy. If something isn't working the way you expected, reach out to us. We want to help.
Flexible payment options are available at checkout if paying all at once doesn't work for you right now. No judgment. Just options.
The Free version gives you 30 days to build and explore your budget. After that, you can still see your data and download a backup, but editing is locked. You can upgrade to Starter or Premium anytime and bring your data with you — nothing is lost.

Still have a question? We'd love to hear from you.
